The Lists

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre maintains a list of places "forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value"--in other words, places with enough historic or environmental significance to be world-recognized and, even more importantly, protected for the future. New sites are added to the list (currently at 936 as of December 2011) every year, and sites can also be removed from the list if they are not adequately preserved. The current list can be found here: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list

The list below is of the current UNESCO World Heritage Sites I have been to at some point in my life (which sadly does not include the one that's in Philadelphia, an hour away from where I grew up...), along with the years I visited. I don't currently have any aspirations to visit all of the listed sites or anything crazy like that, partly because I don't think it's humanly possible (especially since some of them are in places a person with an American passport just plain can't go) and partly because I'm just not interested in all of them. (So there.) But I do like keeping track of how many I've been to, and I'll continue to update my list whenever I can.

  1. Monticello and UVA (USA) (Monticello in 2000; UVA multiple times)

Here's the current list of countries I've been to, however briefly (places I've lived are in bold; Belize is sort of a grey area and thus is not bold):
